“Referbi was created to address a common pain point faced by small and medium-sized businesses — complex and costly referral systems. Our goal was to develop a simple yet powerful SaaS solution that enables businesses to launch referral campaigns quickly and affordably. By combining streamlined functionality with robust integrations, Referbi empowers businesses to drive growth through efficient referral marketing.”

Background

The idea for Referbi originated from a past experience with integrating enterprise-level affiliate marketing tools. While implementing FriendBuy for a client, the team realized that the software, though effective, was too expensive and complex for smaller businesses. This led to the conceptualization of Referbi — a streamlined solution that would deliver the same core functionality at a fraction of the cost and setup time. With this vision in mind, Intobi assembled a dedicated team in early 2022 to build the software from scratch.

From the outset, the project’s primary focus was simplicity and accessibility. Referbi’s objective was to create an intuitive referral marketing platform that allows users to launch campaigns in under 15 minutes. To achieve this, the team focused heavily on UI/UX design and user-centric development, ensuring that even non-technical users could easily configure and manage their referral campaigns. Customers loved Referbi and appreciated that setting up an account takes just 10 minutes.

Business challenges

  • We needed to redevelop everything from scratch. The solution we devised required substantial changes to the code, so the best course of action was to invest in a complete rewrite of the processing.
  • Traditional solutions often involved intricate setup processes, complicated dashboards, and a need for technical support to handle configurations. The challenge was reducing the complexity without compromising functionality, ensuring that the platform was robust yet straightforward to operate.
  • Enterprise-level tools plans usually start at $2,000 per month, which is simply out of reach for most small businesses. We had to create a solution that offered similar functionality at a significantly lower price point without sacrificing essential features like campaign management, analytics, and integration options.
  • Businesses must often test different campaign structures, such as multi-use versus single-use codes, varying reward triggers, and custom redirects. One of the main struggles was creating a system that allowed users to configure various campaign types without getting lost in configuration details.

Value delivered

  • The platform’s user-centric design enabled small businesses to launch and manage referral campaigns without technical expertise. We reduced the complexity of setup processes and simplified workflows.
  • With affordable pricing plans, Referbi allowed small and medium-sized businesses to leverage a marketing strategy typically reserved for larger enterprises. The lower price point was combined with powerful features like automated reward management and campaign analytics. Thus, we still provided a high return on investment for users.
  • Seamless integration into popular e-commerce platforms like Shopify and WooCommerce enabled users to manage their referral campaigns without leaving their store’s admin interface. Instead of juggling multiple tools, business owners could now handle all their referral marketing needs from a single dashboard.
  • The comprehensive campaign management tools allowed businesses to create highly customizable referral programs, experiment with different configurations, and refine their strategies based on real-time feedback. Users could test various reward triggers, modify campaign rules, and personalize every aspect of the referral experience.
  • The robust .NET-based backend architecture ensured the platform could handle thousands of concurrent users, thus supporting businesses as they scaled. With advanced reporting tools and detailed analytics, users gained valuable insights into their campaigns, enabling data-driven decisions.

A comprehensive SaaS platform for referral marketing

Referbi’s intuitive campaign setup wizard allows businesses to create referral campaigns in just a few clicks, minimizing time investment and lowering the barrier to entry. Users can control how pop-ups appear on their sites, choose reward triggers, and customize redirects, ensuring that each campaign aligns perfectly with their brand strategy. The platform’s robust code management features enable businesses to implement single-use or multi-use codes, test various discount strategies, and limit usage, giving them control over promotional offers.

Additionally, reusable email templates and advanced email personalization through variables help businesses create professional, on-brand communication that resonates with customers. The ability to send from custom domains further boosts trust and enhances brand consistency. The analytics and reporting tools offer deep insights into campaign performance, helping businesses optimize their strategies.

E-commerce integrations for Shopify and AppSumo

Given our experience with building Shopify plugins for other clients, we had a solid understanding of the requirements. After two months of development, we submitted the plugin to the Shopify App Store. Referbi’s Shopify and WooCommerce plugins allow users to manage their referral campaigns from within their existing e-commerce dashboards. This integration eliminates the need for multiple logins and provides a cohesive experience, enabling users to track leads, manage codes, and configure campaigns all in one place.

Shopify provided us with a list of corrections and improvements needed to be listed live. The team worked closely with Shopify to address compliance requirements, ultimately achieving listing approval on the third submission. On our third attempt, we were officially added to the Shopify App Store, making Referbi publicly accessible for download. It is now listed on the Shopify App Store, making it accessible to a broad audience of Shopify users. We were excited to start welcoming our first Shopify users and see growth in this area.

Enhanced UI/UX design

Considering that the goal of Referbi was to develop an easy-to-use platform, the team ensured that even non-technical users could simply use it. Everyone should be able to configure and manage their referral campaigns without putting a lot of effort in trying to figure out a complex interface.

We created simple and user-friendly software that saves time and effort, and we also ensured an excellent user interface so that businesses can get the most out of working with us.

Numerous integrated services for enhanced functionality

To enhance Referbi’s functionality and provide a seamless experience, we integrated more key services that support various business operations. For email marketing and automation, we connected with SendGrid and Klaviyo, enabling users to send personalized campaigns and manage communication efficiently. Combined with API access, lead management, and Google Analytics support, Referbi empowers businesses with the tools needed to make data-driven decisions and drive growth.

For secure file storage, we utilized AWS S3, while Cloudflare improved site performance and security. We also added Horoshop  to expand  e-commerce support and Stripe to streamline payment processing, making Referbi a comprehensive solution for running and managing referral campaigns.

“The success of Referbi lies in its ability to deliver complex functionality in an accessible format. From integrating with major e-commerce platforms to creating a smooth user experience, the project has proven that even sophisticated software can be intuitive and affordable. This focus on user-centric design and efficiency is what sets Referbi apart and has driven its rapid adoption among small and medium-sized businesses. Looking ahead to 2025, we have an exciting backlog of new milestones and plans to develop new modules to further enhance Referbi.”
